Autonomous Flying Robotic Bees Build Tower in France

Picture: This picture shows little tiny robotic bees building a building all by themselves by interacting and cooperating with eachother.

If you want to see these robot bees in action click on the link above, and scroll down until you see the video.

Summary: No more construction sites. No more pickup trucks. No more annoying noise. Is this the new way of building? Mini robotic bees working together to build buildings! A group of archetects in France built these robots to build anything they want. They used these robots in a test drive to build a scale model of a tower and it worked perfectly. The robots pick up green eco-friendly bricks which don't require much energy to build, fly them over to the tower, and place the brick in the appropriate position. The robots are innovative and with these robots it requires less time to build buildings. They are only three problems present with these robots. One, the building of all of these robots will probably cost a lot of money and two, the public might not like millions of little robotic bees flying over their heads every time something needs to be built. Lastly, construction workers will be out of a job because the "bees" will be taking their place.

Opinion/Reflection: I personally love the idea, but hate what could result from it. I see how the bees would increase productivity rates, but it would hurt so many people's lives. The bees would be fantastic, moving at a fast pace, making buildings in half the time it would take construction workers. The main thing I wouldn't like is thhe bees always flying over my head. I had a bad experience with a bee when I was very young and I am still somewhat afraid of bees today. I'm not really afraid, but I wouldn't mess with a bee. This problem would be evident to anyone who dislikes bees. Also, they would just be a nuesance. However, a way to solve the jobless problem would be to open up thousands of jobs to make the robot bees :)

Questions:

1.) Do you like the idea of the robot bees being our new working "construction site?"

2.) Do you think the "bees" would create problems?

3.) Do you think the U.S. should wait to get these robot bees until our economy is doing better?

  1. Opinion/Reflection:
I actually thought that this was a very good article. In fact, it has been my favorite to read so far! I find it surprising that humans have figured out how to build these amazing robots and have them practically operate on their own! One thing I find great about these is that there will be less honking noises and backing up beeps of the many construction trucks to wake me up in the morning! But, the one downside would be the constant buzzing! I had watched the video on the link and I had the volume on at first, and after like 30 seconds, I had to put my computer on mute. I guess if we got these "bees" I wouldn't like the noise too much. I agree with Mike and how he said another downside would be fewer jobs for people, but how people could build them. Those people would get paid alot too (if it is done by hand). The bees wouldn't bother me because I am not afraid of bees and to me they look like those toy airplanes you buy at Toys R Us, except alot more high-tech!

    Answer to Question 1:
Yes I do like the idea of bees doing the construction for one reason and one reason only: It will make the construction time so much shorter! There is a bridge being fixed near my house, and it may not be done until I am out of college my mom told me! If we had these bees, that bridge could be fixed by my junior or senior year in high school and that would be great! I think it’s a good idea, but I would feel bad putting alot of construction workers out of their jobs :(

  2. Opinion/Reflection: Wow these "bees" are really cool. I don't think the noise would reduce but it would be a more calming different sound. I also agree with Sarah, after watching the beginning of the video I had to put it on mute because of the annoying noise. Dealing with the economy right now isn't really the time to cut jobs due to our economical status. I wouldn't want to trust our architecture to robots though, think about the devastating after effects if one piece was misplaced. I think I have watched to many movies where robots take over!

Answer to Question 2: I think these bees would eventually make problems in society because we don't know how they react to real bees. The clash between both of them could be horrible. I think they would eventually become a problem, guaranteed that they would reduce the amount of human effort, but also reduce immensely the number of construction jobs!

  3. Opinion/Reflection- Wow! That's actually really cool. The noise they make is pretty annoying though. The noise isn't as bad as construction, but the buzzing will annoy me pretty badly. The other downside would be how the people who usually work with construction would be out of jobs if the "bees" take over! I like the idea of how they use eco-friendly bricks though. These "bees" could cause many problems though. I honestly don't think anything robotic should be trusted. One mistake, and everything can fall apart. People are more beneficial for jobs like this. The "bees" are a cool idea, but I still think people are better for this job.

Answer for Question #2- Yes, I think these bees will create problems. You never know when something in their robotic system could break and that could cause many problems. Also, these bees would take jobs away from construction workers and that's not good, especially with the economy today. Overall, I believe the people would be better than these "bees" because the bees could cause many problems. They would also be very expensive to get.
