Picture: This is what clean water looks like. Could you imagine it being dark colors, unhealthy, and possibly be able to be lit on fire? Well that is what fracking is doing to people's homes, and EPA is not just realizing.

Summary: It was said that EPA announced that fracking or hydraulic fracturing may be causing the groundwater to be contaminated in Wyoming. Of course we know fracking is the process where natural gas is pumped out from the earth, and used in this process are chemicals, sand, etc, to help make this process a bit faster. All the landowners near these fracking systems have been complaining forever of how their water isn't clean, and even environmentalists have been saying this water isn't clean, but the company would not admit it. The people in Wyoming have been complaining for years and how their water isn't even safe to drink or cook with. This natural gas industry employs many people, about 19,000, so when EPA announces about the water some people won't like the news. Then again, it's not fair to the people that they have unhealthy water and can't control where these industries are going to be located. John Fenton said “We’re paying the price for them to make a profit” and he doesn’t know if he poisoning his family or not. This fracking is for sure causing problems and it needs to be fixed soon.

Opinion/Reflection: I really think EPA needs to admit that what they are doing is causing many problems and hurting many people. It's not fair that this fracking is making many people suffer just so the industries can get payed a lot of money. This is something that needs to be stopped soon, or lessened, so people can get healthy and clean water to drink finally. Some families can't even drink or use their water! EPA just needs to fix this and tell people that what they are doing is wrong and they will somehow fix it.

Questions:
1. What do you think of fracking? Good or Bad?
2. Do you think EPA is going to do something about it to fix this?
3. Should the people do something to try and make this problem be a step closer to getting them clean water? Why or why not?
4. How could EPA fix this problem? What could they do?

  1. Opinion/Reflection: I can't believe that the EPA says that fracking "may" be contaminating the water. It is obvious that fracking IS contaminating groundwater of people's property where fracking is going on. In some places it is sobad that people can light their fire on water! I think that the EPA should state that fracking is definitely causing water problems around the fracking sites! This bothers me alot after I saw the fracking video in class the other day. I believe that fracking is causing this contamination problem of the water! I hope the EPA will admit this soon so people can get clean water again!

Answer to Question 2: I don't think that the EPA will do anything about this! I believe that they are going to keep hiding this and not admit that fracking is the main cause! I think that they are more concerned about how much money they are making then what they are doing to the people around them. because of these reasons, I do not think that the EPA will do anything!

  2. Opinion/Reflection: Wow the EPA needs to step up their game. It's totally unacceptable that in some households the tap water can be lit on fire because of the level of contamination in it. After we watched the video on how fracking affects many people, I feel like this is a major problem especially in the U.S.A. but no one (EPA) is doing anything about it. I would like to have one member from the EPA or the person who runs the fracking companies live for a week in one of the residents houses. They would experience the cost that the citizens have to pay for them to frack for gas. I think after that the EPA would take some action! Clean water is a right. Everyone deserves to have easy access to it wherever they live.

Answer to Question 1: I don't believe in fracking and I think it is bad. There are very few pros to it, such as a lot of gas. There are an unlimited amount of cons. People who live around fracking sites get so ill, their lifestyles change all together. Gas tanks can explode and kill any and all wildlife and plants around. Overall I think fracking is a bad idea. I hope the EPA takes action soon!

  3. Opinion/Reflection: This kind of stuff makes me mad. I hate how big company, with big money, and many lawyers can just skip around laws and acts. I don't think this has enough awarenss. If it did, it would make the companies sweat, and government would look guitly. Maybe that is what it takes for someone to do something. I remeber watching a video in class about this. People wuld be able to light their own water on fire. This was making many people sick. EPA should do more for this situation.

Answer to Question 2: By what I have seen right now I don't think they will do anything. Just like every other thing the government doesn't want made public or by comapnies, it will not be fixed or adressed sireously. I think money overpowers the good of the people in this case.

  4. Opinion/Reflection: I have heard a lot lately about fracking causing many families’s drinking water to become contaminated. It is absolutely ridiculous that nothing is done to these companies! Every company that fracks, takes hundreds of thousands, if not more, of peoples’ water away from families. Just recently we saw a video on this in class. What really shocked me in the video is that some people’s water is so contaminated that it can be lit on fire. I thought it was really stupid that a company could get away with so much. What is even worse is that the EPA doesn’t have to check what chemicals these fracking companies are using! Could you imagine what it feels like to have no clean water to drink, shower in, or even wash your hands? Well, if you can, that is what the families with contaminated water problems feel like.

Answer to Question #1: I can’t stand fracking! I understand that it gets electricity very efficiently for us, but this is too much. I mean, come on, there are people with water so contaminated that it can be lit on fire. All fracking does is endanger the lives of the environment and the organisms living in it. Don’t these companies understand that there are other, more efficient, environmentally friendly ways to get electricity? Someone (like the EPA) definitely has to talk to these companies.
