Bee Lovely: The hand cream standing up for insects!

http://www.theecologist.org/green_green_living/health_and_beauty/1053379/bee_lovely_the_hand_cream_standing_up_for_insects.html

PICTURE: Bees carry pollen, bees make honey, bees do lots of things for our ecosystem. I wonder what it would be like if they were... gone?

Summary: UK's threatened bee population is rising day by day. Someone's gotta do something before their eco system comes crashing down. Neal's Yard Remedies has come to the rescue with a campaign, oh and a limited edition hand cream! Neal's Yard made a new hand cream that not only makes soft and healthy skin, but also has plans to save Britain's bees. For every tube of the limited edition Bee Lovely Hand Cream, Neal's Yard will donate 1 euro to protecting UK's threatened bee population as a part of the brand's Save the Bee's campaign. Neal's Yard is also running a petition to outlaw nemonic pesticides which is a pesticide that damages the nerves in an insect resulting in paralysis, one of the biggest threats facing UK's bees! Based on reviews and buyers of the cream, it's supposed to work wonders too!

Opinion/Review: Honestly I think this is a wonderful idea! While they are providing people with whatever honey hand cream they usually buy from other companies, they are helping the situation too. I think unlike other companies, they aren't taking advantage of their products. Think about it, if bees disappear, who will take pollen from flower to flower, who will make honey? Bees are a very very important part of our ecosystem, and if they die off, we are in big trouble.

Question 1: Why don't we hear about the extinction of bees a lot in the media?
Question 2: What could have caused the bees population to be threatened?
Question 3: Do you think bees may be endangered in North America too?

  1. Opinion/Reflection:
I think that this is a great idea from what it seems in the article. For every tube of hand lotion they sell, about $1.60 U.S. are being donated to help save the bees. I like this idea because it is a good way to raise money! Also it is an easy way because you don't need to do that much besides go to a store and buy that specific hand lotion.

    Extention:
Answer to quetion number 1- I don't think that we here about the endangerment or extinction of bees alot in the media because they are so small. They are one out of maybe 1,000 endangered species worldwide and are so small, that I think people just take them for granted. Unless the ENTIRE bee population gets wiped out, I don't think we will be hearing alot about bees any time soon.

  2. Opinion/Reflexion:
This is a great idea! I would definitely but that hand cream! It's a great way to try and save the bees from being endangered. I like the idea of the fundraiser and lotion is a common thing for people to buy, so they would probably make a good profit for it. I really hope this works out and bees don't go extinct because that would be bad for the ecosystem.

    Expansion:
    Answer to Question 1:
I don't think bees are very talked about because they are such a small insect. Just think about all the other insects and animals in the world that are endangered that people would probably pay more attention to. If you think about it, bees are a very important thing to our ecosystem, and if they are gone that would be very bad. I don't think people would fully realized how big of a deal it is until they are actually gone.

  3. Opinion/Reflection: I think that this idea will save Britan's bee population and more importantly, their ecosystem. The bee is a big part of the ecosystem and if extinct, could ruin the ecosystem entirely. The idea of hand lotion saving these bees is brilliant. Hand lotion is a popular thing to buy. I know that my mom buys and uses it very often. With it being such a common product for people to use, and the fact that they are donating 1 euro for each bottle sold is great. I honestly think it will save Britan's bees.

Exspansion: Answer to question #1- I think we don't hear about this often in the media because people would rather hear gossip about the celebrities. Exactly like the turtles from last week, these bees aren't talked about often enough in the media. People don't realize what a big part the smallest animals play in an ecosystem.

  4. Opinion/Reflection:
Bees, bees, bees. From what I know, this insect is so very important to so many species. Many people see them as a pain, literally, but imagine what would happen without them. There would be so much death of plant life. Many flowers depend on this insect to keep it's population alive. Not only that, but some species rely on them for a direct source of energy. Lets not forget about honey. without bees there is no honey, so many people and companies would suffer as a result. I think protection of bees is very important. What this company is doing is very important.

Here is an expansion about how bees will effect produce. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2004/10/1005_041005_honeybees.html
    Ask More Questions:
    1. How will other species react if they were to die off. 2. Can people do anything to help. 3. Is the problem unique to the UK.
